Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert has been given a six-week suspension from all football and football-related activity, suspended until the end of the 2027/28 season, after admitting three Football Association misconduct charges.
An independent Regulatory Commission also imposed a £28,000 fine and a reprimand. The outcome means Eckert remains free to continue in his role at St Mary’s, provided he does not trigger the suspended sanction.
What the FA case concerned
The charges related to the observation of training sessions belonging to Oxford United, Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough before Southampton fixtures in December 2025, April 2026 and May 2026. The FA said Eckert had acted improperly and/or brought the game into disrepute by directing or authorising those observations.
Eckert admitted the three breaches of FA Rule E3.1. The suspended ban will take effect only if he is found to have breached the rules or regulations by requesting, authorising, taking or using information from observation of another club’s training, however that observation is carried out, before its expiry at the end of 2027/28.
The sanction is personal to Eckert and follows the earlier EFL proceedings against Southampton over the same wider episode.
Southampton’s response
Southampton said it welcomed the outcome and hoped it would bring a conclusion to a regrettable period in the club’s history. The club said measures had been introduced to ensure such errors of judgement are not repeated.
Owner Dragan Solak said the club had already suffered enough and welcomed the panel’s recognition of that. He added that Eckert had learned from the matter and that the suspended sentence allowed the head coach to continue in his role.
Solak also thanked supporters for their backing and said the club was ready to look forward. Southampton’s full statement can be read on the club website.
The FA has published the Commission’s written reasons alongside its decision. For Saints, the immediate footballing consequence is clear: Eckert can remain in the dugout as the club turns its focus back to the Championship campaign.
