West Bromwich Albion 1-1 Southampton

Samuel Edozie ended his long wait for a Southampton goal as Saints recovered from a poor first half to draw 1-1 at The Hawthorns. His equalizer in the 53rd minute canceled out Isaac Price’s penalty and gave Saints a chance to chase more than a point.

Leo Scienza’s injury gave Edozie a place in the team, while Flynn Downes returned and Divin Mubama made his first league start. West Brom posed the early threat. Former Saints academy forward Jimmy-Jay Morgan shot over twice, while Daniel Peretz saved efforts from Jayson Molumby and Price. Saints offered little response before the hosts took the lead.

Jack Stephens fouled Rabby Nzingoula inside the penalty area, and Price struck his penalty into the top right corner in the 22nd minute. Peretz then saved another Price shot before the scorer missed again near halftime. Saints reached the break only one goal behind. A modest achievement, but the first half offered few alternatives.

The response after halftime gave us more to enjoy. Keven Schlotterbeck headed wide from Ryan Manning’s cross before Saints drew level. Manning supplied another cross, Kuryu Matsuki’s header was blocked, and Edozie struck from close range. His first Southampton goal since February 2024 changed the contest after a first half that West Brom controlled.

The hosts responded quickly, with James Bree stopping a low cross and Stephens blocking Morgan’s shot. Saints also created chances as the match became more even. Bree headed wide from a corner, and Max O’Leary saved Finn Azaz’s shot. Neither side secured control after the equalizer.

Lewis Dobbin replaced Mubama in the 71st minute and later received the best chance for a Southampton winner. Azaz sent him through with ten minutes left, but O’Leary saved his shot. Downes also intercepted a loose pass from the goalkeeper, only for his attempted pass to Dobbin to waste the opening.

West Brom threatened again when Aune Heggebø tested Peretz from close range in the 85th minute. The Saints goalkeeper made the save to protect the point. Tom Fellows replaced Matsuki late in the match and shot wide in stoppage time, leaving the score at 1-1.
