Norwich City 0-1 Southampton

Southampton beat Norwich City 1-0 at Carrow Road for their first away league win of the season. Kuryu Matsuki scored after 54 minutes. Saints followed their derby win over Portsmouth with another clean sheet. The extra goals can wait.

Tonda Eckert made four changes from the Portsmouth game. Zach Abbott made his Southampton debut at right-back. Samuel Edozie and Lewis Dobbin also started, while James Bree and Cyle Larin were substitutes. Cameron Bragg missed the game through suspension.

Norwich created an early chance when Oscar Schwartau shot wide. James Ward-Prowse then sent a free kick just past the post. Daniel Peretz saved shots from Mathias Kvistgaarden and Jacob Wright as Norwich tried to take the lead.

Flynn Downes left the field after 22 minutes, and Caspar Jander replaced him. Ryan Manning and Abbott received yellow cards before halftime. Abbott later crossed for Finn Azaz, whose volley missed the target. Daniel Grimshaw saved Edozie’s volley before the break to keep the score at 0-0.

Eckert replaced both booked full-backs at halftime. Bree replaced Abbott, and Welington replaced Manning. Southampton then scored the only goal through Matsuki.

Edozie moved into the penalty area from the left and crossed. Norwich failed to clear the ball, and Jander sent a low shot toward goal. Grimshaw saved the shot but left the ball near Matsuki. Matsuki scored from close range.

Norwich responded with chances of their own. Lewis Dobbin blocked a header from José Córdoba on the goal line after Ruairi McConville headed the ball toward him. Peretz later saved from Anthony Musaba, and Jack Stephens made another important clearance.

Larin replaced Edozie after 70 minutes. Divin Mubama replaced Dobbin after 82 minutes. Jander then shot over the bar from an Azaz cross, but Southampton kept their lead.

Saints finished with 15 shots to Norwich’s 12. Both teams had four shots on target. Six wins and two draws from ten league games give Southampton 20 earned points. The four-point deduction leaves 16 official points. Bolton visit St Mary’s next, on Saturday 17 October at 15:00 BST.
