Southampton lost 2-1 at Wrexham after Keven Schlotterbeck turned a late cross into his own net. James Ward-Prowse had brought Saints level, but a game with plenty of chances ended with nothing to show for them.

Finn Azaz tested Anthony Patterson early and Cyle Larin threatened, yet Wrexham struck first. Kieffer Moore headed in Ben Whiteman’s corner in the 35th minute to give the hosts a half-time lead.

Ward-Prowse equalised five minutes after the restart, finishing at the second attempt after Wrexham failed to clear. Daniel Peretz then tipped over an ambitious Moore effort from near halfway. At the other end, Patterson kept out a Ward-Prowse free-kick and Ryan Manning volleyed over.

The decisive moment came in the 89th minute. Jacques Ekomie crossed low from the left and Schlotterbeck diverted the ball past Peretz under pressure from Callum O’Hare.

Saints finished with 66.8% possession, 19 attempts and seven shots on target. Wrexham had eight attempts and four on target. Those numbers offer little comfort when the result goes the other way. Southampton needed to make more of their opportunities, and the late mistake proved costly.
