Birmingham City 1-1 Southampton

Transfer deadline day ended with the football equivalent of a shrug: Birmingham City 1, Southampton 1, and both sides wondering whether they had left a win sitting somewhere in the box.

Birmingham started with the greater urgency. August Priske forced Daniel Peretz into an early save, Jay Stansfield hit the post after Southampton gave the ball away, and the Birmingham striker then headed another excellent chance wide. Saints had more possession overall — 63% to Birmingham’s 37% — but the hosts were making the more dangerous openings in a lively first half.

Cyle Larin had chances of his own, including one sliced wide after Finn Azaz’s clever lay-off, but it was Southampton who finally found the breakthrough. With the added time already running down, Léo Scienza swung in a corner and Keven Schlotterbeck rose above the crowd to power his first Southampton goal into the net. A 1-0 lead at half-time felt valuable, if slightly generous.

Birmingham did not need long to correct the balance. Ten minutes after the restart, Patrick Roberts worked room near the byline and crossed for Priske, who headed home from six yards. The equaliser was a fair reward for Birmingham’s first-half threat and left Saints needing to find another gear.

Tonda Eckert turned to his bench just after the hour, bringing on James Ward-Prowse and Kuryu Matsuki. Southampton improved as the game opened up. Ward-Prowse’s deflected shot was parried by James Beadle, but Larin pulled the rebound wide. Matsuki then volleyed into the bottom corner only for the flag to go up for offside, while Beadle later kept out Ward-Prowse’s late free-kick before James Bree fired the rebound into the sidenetting.

The game finished with five bookings: Birmingham’s Bright Osayi-Samuel, Jhon Solis and Luis Vázquez, plus Southampton’s Divin Mubama and Nathan Wood. That was about as close as the evening got to deadline-day drama on the pitch.

Schlotterbeck’s first goal was the bright spot, while Peretz and the Birmingham woodwork both played their parts in a chance-filled draw. Southampton leave with a point, a new centre-back on the scoresheet, and Lincoln City waiting next on Saturday.
