Southampton 1-4 West Ham United

The 90-minute Carabao Cup tie ended in a heavy home defeat, with Southampton losing 4-1 to West Ham after taking an early lead.

Léo Scienza scored after 10 minutes, giving the 15,867 supporters at St Mary’s an early reason to believe the evening might go well. Southampton held the lead for half an hour, but West Ham equalised through Joshua Ajala in the 41st minute. Cameron Bragg had already been booked after 26 minutes, and Scienza followed him into the book on 34 minutes.

The first half ended 1-1, with West Ham growing into the game and Southampton losing some of the control they had at the start.

Southampton had 57.7 per cent possession and 12 shots, with five on target. West Ham had less of the ball but produced 18 shots, eight on target, and four goals. The difference was in the quality of the chances and the way the visitors finished them.

Ajala scored again eight minutes into the second half to put West Ham ahead. Valentín Castellanos made it 3-1 on 75 minutes, and Jarrod Bowen added a fourth in the 84th. Southampton kept the ball but could not turn it into enough pressure in the West Ham penalty area.

Tonda Eckert called for improvement afterwards. That is understandable: West Ham are a fellow Championship side and a team Southampton will meet in the promotion race. Saints also won only two corners to West Ham’s five, another sign that possession did not produce enough sustained attacking pressure.

Scienza was Southampton’s brightest attacking player, but the result leaves little room for comfort. This was a cup exit in August, and the league remains the priority. The performance still needs correcting before the next meeting with a promotion rival.

The response has to come in the Championship. Southampton have the time to recover, but the home defeat showed how much work remains.
