Sugawara's Future Uncertain as Bremen Opt Against Permanent Deal

By SaintsFC

Yukinari Sugawara faces an uncertain summer after Werder Bremen reportedly decided against making his loan move permanent, leaving the Japanese right-back in limbo between two clubs.

What Happened at Bremen

Sugawara joined the Bundesliga side on loan in January and made a reasonable number of appearances, but Bremen’s hierarchy have concluded that the financial outlay required to sign him outright does not represent value. The reported fee would have been in the region of €5-7m — not extravagant, but enough to give a club with other priorities pause.

Back at St Mary’s, But For How Long?

Sugawara has returned to Southampton’s squad list, but his place in Eckert’s plans is far from secure. James Bree has just signed a new contract until 2029, Mads Roerslev offers a different profile at right-back, and Welington remains an option on that flank. That’s three players competing for what is effectively one starting spot.

Interest From Elsewhere

Sugawara’s availability has not gone unnoticed. Dutch clubs — where he previously thrived at AZ Alkmaar — are understood to be monitoring the situation, and there is interest from Turkey and the Middle East. A return to the Eredivisie, where Sugawara was genuinely excellent, would make sense for all parties if Southampton can secure a reasonable fee.

The Market Value Problem

Southampton paid around €7m to sign Sugawara from AZ in 2024. Recouping that figure may be difficult given that he spent the second half of last season on loan and did not set the Bundesliga alight. A compromise figure — perhaps in the €4-5m range — might be enough to get a deal done.

Reliability note: Tier 2 - Generally Reliable - Daily Echo report. Bremen’s decision against a permanent deal is well-sourced. Interest from other clubs is reported but not yet concrete.
