West Brom Plotting Move for Cameron Archer

By SaintsFC

Cameron Archer has emerged as a target for West Bromwich Albion, with reports suggesting the Baggies are weighing up a move for the Southampton striker this summer.

A Season of Marginal Gains

Archer’s 2025-26 campaign was, by his own admission, a mixed bag. Seven goals in all competitions represented a modest return, though his work rate and link-up play improved markedly under Tonda Eckert. The arrival of Cyle Larin in June — and the return of Ben Brereton Díaz from his Derby loan — has only increased competition for forward places.

Why West Brom Want Him

Albion are in the market for a proven Championship goalscorer, and Archer fits the profile. He’s 24, quick, comfortable running the channels, and has Premier League experience from his time at Aston Villa. The Hawthorns hierarchy believe he could be the missing piece in a side that has flirted with the play-offs without ever quite delivering.

Saints’ Stance

Southampton have not actively marketed Archer, but they are understood to be open to offers for the right price. The club paid around £15m to bring him from Villa Park, and would likely seek to recoup most of that investment. With Larin now the established number nine and Brereton Díaz back in the fold, Archer’s pathway to regular minutes is far from guaranteed.

The Wider Picture

The potential departure of Archer would leave Saints looking a little light up top unless further attacking reinforcements arrive. Jay Robinson’s promotion from the academy is promising but he is still 19, and Damion Downs remains relatively unproven at Championship level. Expect the club to be in the market for a forward regardless of Archer’s fate.

Reliability note: Tier 2 - Generally Reliable - Football Insider report. West Brom’s interest is consistent with their known striker search, but no formal bid has been lodged.
