Eckert Discovers Southampton Actually Has Groundskeepers

In what can only be described as a groundbreaking revelation, Southampton boss Tonda Eckert has publicly acknowledged that St Mary’s Stadium employs people whose job it is to maintain the grass. The manager went so far as to describe their work as “unbelievable” - though whether this reflects genuine amazement or simple disbelief that Southampton manages to keep anything in working order remains unclear.

Ahead of the upcoming home fixture against Norwich, Eckert took time to hail the ground staff for keeping the playing surface in what he generously termed “pristine condition.” For a club that has elevated the art of finding new and creative ways to disappoint, having a pitch that doesn’t resemble a ploughed field represents genuine progress.

The timing of these compliments is particularly noteworthy, coming just before Saints return to home turf. One might cynically suggest that praising the groundskeepers now provides convenient cover should the team proceed to perform like they’re playing on quicksand - at least everyone will know it’s not the pitch’s fault.

To be fair to Eckert, recognising the unsung heroes who ensure players have a decent surface on which to underperform is refreshing. While Southampton’s on-field personnel continue their time-honored tradition of making the simple look impossible, it’s reassuring to know that at least the grass grows in the right direction.

The ground staff, for their part, have yet to comment on whether maintaining pristine conditions for what unfolds above said conditions brings them joy or existential despair. Either way, their professionalism in keeping St Mary’s looking respectable deserves recognition - even if what happens on matchdays occasionally doesn’t.
