The EFL has officially confirmed what Saints supporters probably saw coming from a mile off: another fixture reshuffle that transforms April into a footballing endurance test. Southampton will now host Ipswich Town on Tuesday, April 28 at 7:45pm, after their originally scheduled Good Friday Sky Sports showcase got bumped due to FA Cup commitments.

This latest calendar gymnastics means Saints face the delightful prospect of five matches in just two weeks. The gauntlet begins with a trip to Swansea on Saturday, April 18, followed by three consecutive home fixtures against Bristol City, Blackburn, and Ipswich, before concluding the campaign away at Preston on May 2.

The domino effect stems from Southampton’s FA Cup quarter-final qualification, earned through a 1-0 victory at Fulham. This achievement grants them the privilege of hosting Premier League title favourites Arsenal over Easter weekend – surely the kind of fixture congestion most clubs dream of complaining about.

The scheduling shuffle doesn’t end there. Saints’ clash with Wrexham, originally set for Monday, April 6, now awaits confirmation from the FA and EFL. With Ipswich claiming one of only two available midweek slots, the Wrexham match will likely land on either Tuesday, April 7, or Wednesday, April 8.

Currently sitting fourth in the Championship table following a 3-3 draw with Stoke City, Ipswich holds an eight-point cushion over sixth-placed Wrexham. For Southampton, this fixture congestion represents both the reward and punishment of cup progress – though most supporters would gladly accept fixture pile-ups if it means meaningful matches in May rather than beach holidays.

The phrase “fixture fatigue” is about to take on new meaning at St Mary’s.
