There’s nothing quite like the beautiful game’s ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory – or in this case, snatch a missed opportunity from the jaws of potential glory. Southampton’s under-21s discovered this timeless football truth the hard way as Everton’s young Toffees served up a late equaliser to spoil what could have been a rather pleasant evening at the office.

The young Saints had been enjoying a decent spell of form, extending their unbeaten run to four games – a streak that would make their senior counterparts weep with envy on most seasons. More tantalisingly, victory would have propelled them into second place, a lofty perch that probably felt within touching distance for much of the evening.

Alas, football had other plans. In added time – that magical period where dreams go to die and opposing managers suddenly discover tactical genius – Everton found their equaliser to make it 2-2. One can only imagine the collective groan from the Southampton dugout as their carefully cultivated lead evaporated into the night air.

While the point keeps the unbeaten run intact, it’s hardly the stuff of celebration when second place was beckoning like a siren song. The young Saints will have to console themselves with the knowledge that they’re heading in the right direction, even if football’s fondness for last-minute drama means that direction occasionally involves scenic detours.

Still, four games unbeaten suggests these youngsters are learning the ropes rather well. They’re just also learning that in football, as in life, timing is everything – and Everton’s timing was frustratingly impeccable.
